EMERGENCY PLAN

In the event of an emergency or we will implement a plan to care for your child until you arrive.  Your child’s safety and comfort are our highest priority and our Emergency plan is designed with this as our main concern.

STAFF PREPARATION

Our staff members are all trained in CPR and emergency first aid.  Our training is up to date and our certification is renewed every two years.  We review our response to emergency situations and have a clear understanding of the role we may need to take.

SUPPLIES
Our Emergency supplies are stored in the shed on the playground.  We have 5 gallons of water, a case of energy bars, a supply of space blankets, flashlights, a radio, and batteries. We also have first aid supplies and emergency information for each child in our
class.

EVACUATION AND RELOCATION

If we need to evacuate the building we will leave a red ribbon on the double doors to let you or anyone know we have left the classroom. Our first relocation site will be the playground where we will set up a recovery area to care for and comfort the children.  We will stay there as long as the weather is good.  If it is cold or raining we will go to the hall at Trinity Episcopal church, which is located right behind our playground.  Both relocation sites are clear of overhead wires.  We are prepared to keep your children until you arrive.

CHILDREN’S PREPARATION

A building fire safety inspection is done yearly. We practice fire drills and earthquake drills on a monthly schedule.  Our response to a fire drill is to file out of the building through the prescribed route. Our earthquake drill consists of a routine of duck, cover and hold until the shaking stops, followed by leaving the building.  We talk to the group about the emergencies and describe what it might sound and look like.  We will let you know when drills are planned so you can follow up with your child.

THINGS YOU CAN DO

First of all, familiarize yourself with our plan.  Knowing we are with your child may be your only comfort if you are not able to reach us.  Keep all your emergency information up to date, and keep a copy of it with you at home or in your car if you commute. Notify emergency back up guardians of their responsibility and our procedures. Determine a primary and back-up route to get to the school in the event your usual route is inaccessible.  Talk to your child about emergencies both at home and away so that they see this as a way that we care for them. Emphasize your concern and your confidence in the teachers to take care of your child. Acknowledge their fear and give them a healthy response technique to practice when they feel afraid.

WE ALWAYS NEED TO BE ABLE TO REACH YOU OR A DESIGNATED PERSON WHEN YOUR CHILD IS WITH US IN SCHOOL.  THE PRIORITY PHONE NUMBER IS THE ONE WE CAN CALL FOR IMMEDIATE CONTACT.  IF YOU WILL BE UNAVAILABLE OR OUT OF TOWN LEAVE THE NUMBER OF A PERSON WE CAN CALL AND REACH IMMEDIATELY.

USE THE YELLOW AUTHORIZATION FORM FOR ALTERNATE PRIORITY PHONE NUMBER ON DAYS WHEN THERE IS A TEMPORARY CHANGE.
