  • The Sciences, Music and Art Curriculum Overview

Presenting formal scientific language for botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy and anthropology introduces your child to the fundamental approach of these disciplines in an accurate and organized way. This is precisely what makes the sciences accessible to your young child. Children fascinated by the names of things are lead to the art of classification, which in turn leads to the pursuit, and understanding of complex concepts of structure and function. Hands-on experiments, which demonstrate electricity, magnetism, gravity, light, and other physical properties, provide active learning opportunities. We know that learning is optimized when independent and collaborative activity is a large part of the process. Science concepts usually reserved for older children in traditional classrooms are part of the daily life in a Montessori class from the very beginning of the elementary years.

    MUSIC AND ART
Music and art are part of every day in our classroom. Music for example is as much a part of the environment as the pictures on the wall. The work in ear training started in the primary class continues to be refined in the elementary class by building on the first experiences and leading to the beginnings of reading and writing music. As with mathematics the Montessori materials make this skill accessible to your young child.

Art is introduced as an individual area for study as well as an important part of your child’s personal expression and to illustrate research and presentations. Maria Montessori said that art is a natural activity and a necessary one for each child to cultivate. Learning about art is learning about the rich world of sensation, emotion and human expression. Through art children learn many things such as: aesthetics, how the world looks, how to express their knowledge and a tangible representation of feelings. Art gives children new ways of looking at things and enriches their imagination. This is of paramount importance for the development of creative thinking which is essential to a scientist, inventor, writer, artist or parent.
